    History of Baseball Caps

    History of Baseball Caps

    Origins

The original ancestor of baseball caps was a round-ended top baseball cap with a long peak at the front and a button on the top which appeared in 1860, and baseball caps were a popular trend until 1900.

    Development

During the 1940s, baseball caps were popularly adopted with latex rubber inside the hats that formed the shape of modern baseball caps. The front peak, also known as the “bill” or “brim”, was designed to protect a player’s eyes from the sun. In general, the front peak was much shorter in the earlier days of the baseball hat. After the baseball hats’ evolution, the hats have become more structured, compared with the overall floppy cap during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Baseball caps also became an identification of a team with its logo, mascot, color, or initials on the baseball caps.

Previously, baseball hats were designed with only standard hat sizes. Since the early 1970s, they have also been available in an average size that fits all, with an adjustment placket on the back.

Since the 1980s, various baseball hats have been prevalent all over the world, especially in the United States, both for utilitarian (protecting the eyes from the sun) and as a fashion item.

Baseball hats are a part of the traditional baseball headwear that features a front brim pointing forward to protect the eyes from the sun.

    What’s a Baseball Cap?

     Shape

A baseball cap is a type of soft hat that features a crown top and a stiff bill on the front. Sometimes with embroidery/metal holes placed on the crown of the hat, and with adjustable closure at the back.

The front crown part of baseball hats generally shows a pattern or a logo for commercial marketing activities.

The adjustable closure at the back is usually designed with an elastic band, plastic prong-in-a-hole buckle, stick-on Velcro, a zipper, a tri-glide slide, or metal clip slide so that it can be adjusted fast according to different head circumferences.

The basic shape includes a curved brim at the front which is similar to some styles of 19th-century sunbonnets.

    General Design

Generally, fitted baseball hats that are designed without an adjuster on the back, usually feature a 5-panel crown with a covering button on the top of the crown, a hole at the back, and a front bill. Sometimes with breathable eyelets. Metal grommets or normal/embroidery fabric eyelets are often sewn or attached near the top of each panel to provide better ventilation for wearers. There is also another design for better ventilation, for example, the rear parts of the crown are made of net-like mesh material for extra ventilation. The front peak is typically adopted with a sewn-in piece of paperboard or stiff plastic to shield the eyes from sunlight or strong lights.

    Baseball Cap Wash Notes

    • Wash Method for Cleaning New Baseball Caps:
    1. Prepare a water container. Any clean basin can be used as a water container. It’s better to put cold water into the basin, but if the hat is very dirty, you can put warm water into the basin. Never use hot to clean because high temperatures will deform the hat.
    2. Add about 1 tablespoon detergent( regular clothes detergent without bleach) into the basin to mix evenly.
    3. Treat obvious stains first. Those obvious stains on your hat, such as mud clods, oil stains, and sweat stains, need to be pre-treated. Dip a clean cotton swab or old toothbrush into the clothes detergent, then gently scrub or brush the soiled area.
    4. Soak the baseball cap with water. Put the baseball cap in a mixture of cold water and detergent and wet it thoroughly. It is best to soak the cap for a few hours. During this time, the mild detergent will effectively break down the dirt.  You can check the hat from time to time by taking it out of the water to see if the dirt has soaked off.
    5. Rinse off the foam. When the hat is finished soaking, empty or drain the solution from the bucket or sink. Next, turn on the faucet and rinse the hat with warm (not hot) water. Be sure to rinse off all the foam. This step will also help remove any remaining stains from the hat.
    6. Absorb the moisture from the hat. Use a clean towel to gently press the hat so that most of the moisture is absorbed. Be careful to be gentle and not to rub too hard. Once the excess water is absorbed by the towel, set the hat aside to dry.
    7. To prevent the hat from deforming after drying, you can put the hat on a round object such as a ball or melon. You can also wear the hat on your head until it dries.
    8. Do not put the hat in the dryer, as that will damage it.
    • Wash Method for Hairy Baseball Caps
    1. Use sweater special detergent to clean wool baseball caps. Although woolen fibers are durable, they require a special detergent for cleaning. When buying detergent, look for the sweater-specific label or at least choose a detergent product that won’t damage the woolen fabric.
    2. Soak the hat for a few hours. Pour about a tablespoon of sweater detergent into a bucket of cold water, stir it up, and put the wool baseball cap in the bucket to soak for an hour.
    3. If the hat is particularly dirty, you can soak it first and then use your hands or an old toothbrush to remove any visible stains. Be careful not to rub or brush too hard, or you will damage the wool.
    4. Rinse the hat well. After the hat is soaked, empty the bucket of dirty water, or drain the sink. Turn on the faucet and rinse the hat with cold water to remove the foam and remaining dirt.
    5. Place the hat on a round object to dry. Improper drying methods are especially likely to cause deformation of woolen hats. Put the hat on a balloon, basketball, watermelon or any other round object close to the size of your head and let it dry naturally.
    6. If the situation is urgent, you can even dry your hat on a round coffee can.
    7. Notes: Woolen hats should never be dried in a dryer.
    • Wash Method for Old Baseball Caps
    1. Test the color fastness of the hat before washing. Old baseball caps are great collectibles, but the material of these caps is sometimes hard to tell, so you don’t know which washing method to choose. In general, a mixture of cold water and a small amount of laundry detergent can be used to wash old baseball caps. However, you need to first dip a cloth into some of the mixture and gently wipe it on inconspicuous places like the inside of the hat.
    2. If the hat loses its color, don’t wash it yourself. You’d better send the hat to a professional laundry or simply don’t wash it.
    3. If there is no color loss, it means that cold water mixed with laundry detergent can be used to wash the hat.
    4. Partial cleaning of old baseball caps. Old baseball caps are more likely to wash badly, so don’t dip the whole hat into the water. Prepare a clean soft cloth or an old toothbrush. Mix cold water and a small amount of laundry detergent thoroughly, then dip the cloth or toothbrush into the mixture and gently rub or brush off localized stains.
    5. After the stain is removed, wet the cloth with clean water and press the cap gently to absorb the detergent.
    6. Air dry the baseball cap. Place the cap over a round object such as a soccer or cantaloupe- anything close to the size of your head will do. Next, just wait for the hat to dry naturally.
